THE TOXIC AVENGER

Marvel Comics • 1991-1992 • 11 Issues

Written by Doug Moench • Various Artists

Spearheaded by legendary creator and publisher Stan Lee, this series was Marvel's take on The Toxic Avenger, blending superhero action with satire and environmental themes. The comic retained elements of Troma's dark humor while making Toxie a more traditional superhero. It followed his battles against polluters, criminals, and the nefarious Apocalypse, Inc., and was notable for its mix of social commentary and absurd humor.

TOXI-FACT: Toxie's first comic appearance was in Marvel Age #98, which featured a preview of the first issue.

TOXIC CRUSADERS

Marvel Comics • 1992 • 8 Issues

Various Writers • Various Artists

Aimed at a younger audience, this Toxic Crusaders series was based on the animated series, which was syndicated in over 90% of the United States. Unlike the more violent Toxic Avenger comics, this series leaned into humor, slapstick action, and environmentalist messages as Toxie and his team battled Dr. Killemoff's pollution-based schemes. The artwork and storytelling were more cartoonish, staying true to the kid-friendly tone of the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. Despite its short run of eight issues, it remains a nostalgic piece of Toxic Crusaders history.

Various Writers • Various Artists

Fleetway's Toxic Crusaders was another tie-in to the animated series, featuring the adventures of Toxie and his mutated allies as they fought against Dr. Killemoff and his Pollution Patrol. Unlike the Marvel series, this comic was structured more like a magazine, including puzzles, activities, and humor alongside the stories. It shared the same lighthearted tone as the cartoon and Marvel's adaptation, appealing to young readers before being discontinued after eight issues.

THE ALL-NEW ADVENTURES OF THE TOXIC AVENGER

Troma Comics • 2000 • One Shot

Written by Brian McNulty • Art by Joe Paradise

When Troma launched an independent comic label in 2000, the Toxic Avenger was a natural fit for his own book. Hundreds of copies were distributed at Troma events throughout the year, including with a variant cover at the Cannes Film Festival, but issues beyond the debut failed to materialize. A single issue bearing the same title was released by Spain's Fester Comix, but was otherwise unconnected to the first issue.
